Rectifier Transformer

Ratings

Rectifier transformers are designed with secondary currents up to 10,000 A. This is inside the normal industry band — chlor alkali units commonly run near 40 kA DC and aluminium potline groups between 25 kA and 100 kA — so a 10,000 A design is a conservative, well proven regime rather than an extreme one. Secondary voltage, pulse number, phase shift, impedance and cooling are all set to your rectifier topology and duty cycle.

OEM and ODM

We build rectifier transformers on both an OEM and an ODM basis. Under OEM we work to your drawings, your brand and your documentation format. Under ODM we take your DC voltage, DC current, duty cycle, ambient conditions and harmonic limits and return the electromagnetic design, the thermal design and the outline drawing for approval. Third party inspection and witness testing are supported on both routes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What secondary current can your rectifier transformers handle?

We design rectifier transformers with secondary currents up to 10,000 A. That sits in the middle of the normal industry band: chlor alkali units commonly run near 40 kA DC and aluminium potline groups between 25 kA and 100 kA.

How do you control harmonics in a rectifier transformer?

Through multi pulse phase shifting, typically a 12 pulse base with units paralleled to reach 24, 36 or 48 pulse. Extended delta phase shifting on the grid side suppresses the 5th, 7th, 11th and 13th harmonics, and split windings on the valve side reduce DC ripple.

What information do you need to quote a rectifier transformer?

DC voltage and DC current, the rectifier topology and pulse number, duty cycle, ambient conditions, harmonic limits, the cooling medium available on site, and the standards the installation has to meet.

Do you build rectifier transformers on an OEM basis?

Yes. We build to your drawings and brand under OEM, or take the duty and site conditions and carry out the full design under ODM. Both routes support third party inspection and witness testing.
