Frequently Asked Questions
What makes an arc furnace transformer different from a standard power transformer?
A wide secondary regulation range, low secondary voltage with very high current, high impedance to stabilise the arc, and mechanical strength to survive repeated short circuits during scrap meltdown.
How is the short circuit requirement handled?
Windings are braced and banded, leads are kept short and balanced to limit electromagnetic forces, and the design is verified against the short circuit withstand requirements of the applicable standard.
Can a series reactor be included?
Yes. A series reactor lengthens the arc and lowers electrode consumption in the initial melting period, and it can be supplied integral with the transformer or as a separate unit.
What cooling is used on arc furnace transformers?
Forced oil arrangements are standard on larger units, either OFAF or OFWF depending on whether water or air is the available cooling medium on site. Cooler redundancy is provided so the furnace keeps running during a cooler fault.
