What furnace types do you design electric furnace transformers for?
Electric arc furnaces, ladle refining furnaces, induction furnaces and submerged arc furnaces used in ferroalloy production. Each has a different duty cycle, so the transformer is specified against the process rather than a generic rating.
Why is on load tap changing important on a furnace transformer?
Because the furnace load changes through the melt cycle. On load tap changing lets the voltage be adjusted without interrupting production, which shortens tap to tap time and reduces electrode consumption.
What determines the transformer rating for a furnace?
The melting cycle rather than the nameplate kVA. Charge weight, target tap to tap time, power-on time, electrode regulation method and the permissible overload all feed into the rating.
