Frequently Asked Questions
What impedance range do your furnace transformers cover?
Impedance is set against the melting cycle, generally inside the 4.5% to 21% band. Higher impedance limits short circuit current and stabilises the arc, which matters more on a furnace than a low loss figure.
How wide is the secondary voltage regulation range?
Secondary voltages are normally in the low hundreds of volts with multiple tap steps and on load tap changing, so the furnace can be driven through meltdown, refining and holding without changing equipment.
Which cooling methods are used on furnace transformers?
AN and AF on smaller units, with OFAF and OFWF on larger ones. The cooling arrangement is sized against the cyclic load rather than a steady rating, because furnace duty alternates between heavy and light load.
Can you handle short circuit duty on an arc furnace?
Yes. Arc furnace service produces repeated short circuits and mechanical shock, so windings are braced, leads are shortened and balanced, and the design is checked against the short circuit requirement in the applicable standard.
