What Is a Marine Transformer?

A marine transformer does the same electrical job as any other distribution transformer. What separates it is the environment it has to survive and the paperwork it has to carry.

What the term covers

Marine transformer is a family name, not a single product. It covers transformers installed on board ships, on offshore platforms, and on floating production units. The electrical design follows the same principles as a shore unit of the same rating; the construction, the materials and the approval route are what change.

A unit destined for a machinery space on a merchant vessel and a unit destined for an offshore platform deck are both called marine transformers, and they are not built the same way. Offshore units typically carry heavier corrosion protection and are configured for longer intervals between maintenance visits.

What the marine environment does to a transformer

  • Continuous vibration. Machinery, propellers and hull movement keep the structure in motion for the whole life of the vessel. Core and coil assemblies are clamped and braced so that nothing works loose, and the clamping has to stay effective after years of this.
  • Salt-laden air. Salt attacks windings, terminations, fasteners and paint. Insulation systems that resist moisture ingress, corrosion-resistant fixings and sealed enclosures are the standard responses.
  • Inclination. A vessel heels and trims. Cooling paths have to keep working at the angles the vessel is surveyed for, and the applicable limits come from the classification rules rather than from the manufacturer.
  • Restricted space. Transformer rooms are rarely generous, so dimensions and termination positions are usually fixed by the shipyard drawing.
  • Noise. Limits are tightest near accommodation. Core flux density, core construction, mounting and enclosure treatment are the levers, and they have to be settled at specification stage.

Where marine transformers are used

  • Main and emergency switchboard distribution.
  • Propulsion and thruster drive supplies.
  • Shore connection and shore power supply.
  • HVAC, ventilation and pump drives.
  • Navigation and communication equipment supplies.
  • Cargo handling and deck machinery.
  • Drilling, production and compression systems on offshore units.

Standards and approval

Marine installations are governed by classification society rules alongside SOLAS and IMO requirements, with IEC 60092 covering electrical installations in ships and mobile or offshore units. A project that requires classification review normally runs through design document submission, type testing where applicable, manufacturing inspection, unit testing, and an onboard installation survey.

In practice we support the documentation, inspection and witness testing process for the society named in your specification, and we say plainly which approvals we hold and which would be obtained for the project. We would rather state that up front than leave it to be discovered at the survey.

What to send us

The electrical documentation for the vessel usually contains most of what is needed. If you send the following, the configuration can be settled without a round of questions:

  • Rated capacity in kVA and the duty the unit is expected to carry.
  • Primary and secondary voltage, phase arrangement and vector group.
  • Supply frequency and the cooling arrangement the space allows.
  • Classification society and any type-approval requirement.
  • Ambient temperature in the space and the permitted temperature rise.
  • Enclosure type and ingress protection, plus any hazardous-area classification.
  • Footprint, weight and cable entry direction from the shipyard drawing.
