Electrical Distribution for Oil and Gas Facilities

Oil and gas sites ask more of distribution equipment than most. The area classification governs where equipment can go, the environment is often corrosive, and a power interruption can cost more than the equipment itself.

We supply substations, transformers and switchgear into that environment, specified against the area classification and the site conditions you give us. This page describes how we would work with your project; it is not a list of delivered oil and gas contracts.

What Shapes the Specification

  • Area classification – where the equipment can be installed, and what the enclosure has to provide in a hazardous area.
  • Corrosive atmosphere – offshore salt, or H2S and process chemicals onshore, which drives the coating and material specification.
  • Ambient range – desert heat or arctic cold, both of which change the cooling and the material selection.
  • Continuity requirement – whether the load can tolerate a single contingency, which decides if you need redundancy.
  • Grid or generator supply – and whether the site runs islanded, which changes the protection scheme.

How We Would Work With Your Project

We would start with your area classification drawing, the load list and the site conditions, then propose an arrangement and the applicable standard set for your approval. Where a hazardous-area certified enclosure is required, we can supply the substation to be installed in a safe area or provide the equipment for your certified enclosure supplier to house.

We would rather tell you early that something is outside what we supply than discover it at the drawing approval stage.

Equipment for Demanding Sites

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you supply equipment for hazardous areas?

We supply the electrical equipment – transformers, switchgear and substations – and specify it against the area classification you give us. Where a certified enclosure is required, we can provide the equipment for your certified enclosure supplier to house.

What does corrosive atmosphere change?

The enclosure material and coating specification, the fastener material and the ventilation design. Offshore salt and onshore process chemicals are specified differently.

Can you supply for both onshore and offshore?

We supply the electrical equipment for both. The difference is in the specification rather than the equipment type, and we build to the standard your project names.

How is the protection scheme decided?

From your protection study, including whether the site can run islanded on generators, which changes the settings and the scheme.

What do you need to quote?

The area classification, the load list, the supply arrangement, the site conditions and the standard your project specifies.
