A wind project collects the output of the turbines at a medium voltage, then steps it up to the grid voltage at a single point. The substation at that point carries the whole output of the park, so its availability matters more than on almost any other type of project.
We supply the step-up transformer and the substation package around it. Units are assembled and tested in the workshop, which keeps the site programme short on sites where weather windows are limited.
What Wind Projects Ask For
- Step-up transformer – from the collection voltage to the grid voltage, rated for the full park output.
- MV collection switchgear – for the incoming feeders from the turbine strings.
- Grid interface – metering, protection and the isolation point your grid operator requires.
- Site conditions – wind sites are often cold, high, salty or remote, and the enclosure and the transformer specification have to reflect that.
Conditions We Design Against
| Condition | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Low ambient temperature | Oil grade, material selection, heater provisions |
| High altitude | Clearances, cooling derating |
| Coastal exposure | Enclosure material and coating specification |
| Remote access | Transport envelope, lifting provisions, monitoring |
| Weak grid | Protection and ride-through requirements |
Working to Your Grid Code
Wind connections come with detailed grid code requirements on fault ride-through, reactive capability and response to dispatch instructions. Those requirements sit in the protection and control scheme, not in the transformer, so we build to the scheme your consultant specifies and confirm the interface with them before production.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a wind farm substation do?
It collects the output of the turbines at medium voltage and steps it up to the grid voltage at a single connection point, carrying the protection, metering and isolation that the grid operator requires.
Are wind substations built differently?
The electrical function is the same as any step-up substation. What changes is the physical specification: cold, altitude, salt exposure and difficult access all affect the enclosure and the transformer.
Can you work to our grid code?
Yes. The grid code sits in the protection and control scheme, and we build to the scheme your consultant specifies, confirming the interface before production.
Do you supply the turbine transformer as well?
We supply the step-up transformer for the substation and the distribution transformers for the site auxiliary supply. The turbine-mounted units are normally in the turbine supplier’s scope.
How do you handle a remote site?
We check the transport route, the crane position and the turning radius before finalising the dimensions, and we can add remote monitoring so the unit reports its own condition.
