Switchgear Control and Protection Boards

The control and protection side of a substation is what decides how the equipment behaves when something goes wrong. It is a small part of the bill of materials and a large part of whether the installation is easy to operate and safe to maintain.

We are a switchgear manufacturer, so the control and protection boards we supply are built alongside the panels they sit in — protection relays, CT wiring, interlocks and indication are fitted and functionally checked before the board leaves the workshop. If your scheme needs an MV switchgear supplier to take responsibility for the whole lineup, that is the scope we quote.

We build the control board alongside the switchgear it serves, which means the interlocking and the indication are designed as one scheme rather than patched together on site.

What We Put on the Control Board

  • Protection relays – overcurrent, earth fault, and the additional functions your grading study calls for.
  • Indication and control – breaker status, spring charge, local and remote selector, trip and close pushbuttons.
  • Interlocking – hardwired logic that prevents an unsafe operating sequence, backed up by key or solenoid interlocks where the operator wants them.
  • Metering – volts, amps, power and energy, with a communication interface where the readings go to a SCADA system.
  • Auxiliary supply – the DC or AC auxiliary circuit, with supervision and a changeover where redundancy is specified.

Remote Monitoring

Where the substation is unattended, we add a gateway that carries status, alarms and measurements to your SCADA. The protocol is chosen to match the system you already run, and we agree the point list with your engineer before we build it, so there is no surprise at commissioning about which signals are available.

Documentation and Testing

Each board ships with the wiring diagram, the interlock logic description, the point list and the functional test report. We run the scheme on the bench before the board goes into the enclosure, which is where wiring and logic mistakes are cheapest to fix.

We build to the standard your specification names. Where it names IEC 61439 for the assembly or IEC 62271-200 for the switchgear, we confirm the applicable clauses with you first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a switchgear control board?

The panel that carries the protection relays, the control switches, the indication and the interlocking for a switchgear assembly. It tells the operator what state the equipment is in and makes sure only safe operations are possible.

Can the substation be monitored remotely?

Yes. We fit a gateway that carries status, alarms and measurements to your SCADA over the protocol your system uses, and agree the point list with your engineer before building.

How do you handle interlocking?

Hardwired logic is the default because it cannot be changed by accident. Where the operator wants a physical key or solenoid interlock, we add it on top.

Who sets the protection values?

The settings come from your network’s protection grading study. We wire and commission to that scheme; the final settings are confirmed on site against the study.

What documents come with the board?

Wiring diagrams, the interlock logic description, the SCADA point list if monitoring is fitted, and the functional test report.
