Industrial Power Distribution for Plants

Industrial loads are unforgiving. Large motors start against near-full voltage, processes cannot tolerate an unexplained trip, and the plant usually grows in stages rather than all at once. The distribution system has to be designed around those three facts.

We supply the substations, the transformers and the switchgear for plants of that kind, sized from your load list rather than from a catalogue.

How We Approach a Plant Distribution System

  • Start from the load list – with the diversity you actually expect and the starting currents of the largest motors.
  • Place the substations near the load – shorter cable runs mean lower voltage drop and less copper.
  • Allow for the next stage – a spare feeder and some transformer headroom cost far less now than a second substation later.
  • Separate the critical loads – so a fault on a non-essential feeder does not stop the process.

Harmonics and Power Quality

Variable speed drives, rectifiers and large DC equipment all distort the waveform. If your plant has them, the transformer and any capacitor bank need to be specified with that in mind, or you will be replacing capacitors and chasing nuisance trips. Tell us what non-linear load you have and we will size the equipment accordingly.

Documentation for Your Maintenance Team

We supply the arrangement drawings, the wiring diagrams, a termination schedule and the test reports, in the language your maintenance team works in. Spare parts lists are available for the equipment we supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you size a plant substation?

From your load list, the diversity you expect and the starting currents of the largest motors. Send the list and we will propose a rating and explain the reasoning.

Should we use oil or dry-type transformers indoors?

Cast resin dry-type is the usual choice indoors because it avoids the fire and containment provisions that oil needs. Where the substation is outdoors, oil-immersed remains the normal option.

What about harmonics from drives?

Significant non-linear load changes the transformer specification and the capacitor bank design. Tell us what drives and rectifiers you have and we will account for it.

Can the system be extended later?

Yes if it is planned now. A spare feeder and some transformer headroom are cheap at the design stage and expensive to add afterwards.

Do you provide spares information?

Yes. Spare parts lists are available for the equipment we supply, and we will tell you what we would keep on the shelf.
